Clara’s Sketchbook – Sophisticated Design

Clara’s Sketchbook – Sophisticated Design

I wanted to take a moment to share another student sketchbook with you. Clara has an awesome sense of design. Her use of color is pretty cool too.

As I browse through Clara’s sketchbook it’s almost as if I’m taking a tour of her home. With each page representing a different room with it’s unique feel.

I’m really fortunate to have met Clara. Clara was not originally enrolled in my class, thank goodness she stopped by on week two to ask if she could register. Thank goodness I said said yes!

Clara has so much to offer. All of the the other students gain so much from watching her work. She offers so much diversity in her technique and design.

Clara just really rounds out the classroom with her sophisticated design.

As you work in your sketchbook experiment with some of the techniques used by Clara in her sketchbook. Try adding some more color, shape and texture.

Also try using different pencils and markers. Your sketchbook should be a fun safe place to experiment. Be different and unique.

Thanks so much for taking the time to check out Clara’s sketchbook video. Leave us a comment letting us know what you think.

Phoebe’s Sketchbook Drawings

Phoebe’s Sketchbook Drawings

I wanted to take a moment this Holiday weekend to share a pretty cool sketchbook with you. Phoebe is an incredibly talented student enrolled in my foundation drawing class at the School Of Visual Arts in Manhattan New York. First off I have to thank Phoebe for sharing her sketchbook. Phoebe is wonderful to have in class. She puts her full effort into every assignment.

What I love most about Phoebe’s work is the diversity in her character design. No two characters look the same. She has a natural ability to draw a characters personality with little effort. Her characters show both emotion and movement. Certainly not an easy thing to accomplish.

Phoebe’s life drawings and character designs are one in the same. She can really draw people with their emotions shining through.

This is certainly a unique gift Phoebe has been blessed with. Phoebe’s work will certainly grow and mature with time. I am really looking forward to watching her progression, it will be amazing.

Thanks for watching.

Jack’s Sketchbooks

Jack’s Sketchbooks

I as gear up for a new semester of teaching at the School of Visual Arts my mind brings me back to Jack. Every new semester brings the uncertainty of new students. Last year I was blessed with an amazing class of twenty-one incredible students. Jack was the different student. At first glance I wasn’t sure what he was all about. But as the weeks progressed I became to realize he was in a class all his own.

The energy Jack brings to the table is truly incredible. Jack definitely got the most feedback on YouTube when I posted his first sketchbook. People loved him or really hated him. The comments were out of control.

He handled the negative comments like a trooper. I told him to screw the negative comments and stick to what he loves. That is the only way to succeed and have fun as an artist.

As you know I’m as traditional as they come with my style. I love realistic figurative art. However, I also love different. Jack’s work is certainly different. As you glance through his sketchbook what is the one thing that inspires you?

Is it the way he uses color? Is it the way he fills every page? Or is it Jack’s crazy 1970’s hair style?

Either way I’m so grateful to have students like Jack in my class. I wonder what the new class vibe will be like this September? Who will be the new Jack?

Leave a comment below letting us know what you think about his work.

Oh, and do what you love and screw the haters.

Julia’s Sketchbook

Julia’s Sketchbook

As I relaunch the Drawing Tutorials Online Blog it felt totally appropriate to have Julia’s sketchbook be our first post.

Julia epitomizes what DTO is all about. A passion to have drawing be the center of one’s lifestyle. What do I mean? As you can see Julia loves to draw. Drawing is at the center of her lifestyle.

She is embarking on her journey as a visual artist and drawing is how she is manifesting her vision. From stop motion to jewelry creation every concept is drawn in her sketchbook first.

Julia’s Sketchbook is pretty amazing. Julia is a young multi-talented artist with a bright future ahead of her. It’s students like Julia that inspire me to teach students of all levels.

Grab your sketchbook, turn off your phone and start drawing. You will find yourself more relaxed.

I hope you enjoy looking through her sketchbook.
