Christine’s Sketchbook – Dancer’s Delight

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a sketchbook video. Christine is the last student to represent the class last semester’s class.

I really enjoyed having Christine as a student in the class. Christine really came into her own as the year progressed. I really thought that her linework looked great. Her gestures drawings also improved.

I wish Christine lots of success in her second year at the School Of Visual Arts. I hope she visits from time to time to share her ongoing progress.

We both have one thing in common, we both love to draw dancers. Dancers offer so much while posing on the modeling stand. They offer movement, action, physique, as well as storytelling.

Jasper’s Sketchbooks

Jasper was a student enrolled in my foundation drawing class at the School of Visual Arts. The semester has now come to a close and I am certainly going to miss the class.

Jasper, in particular, was truly such a great student to have in class. His life drawings were spectacular for a first-year student. We could have just filmed Jasper’s life drawing pad and I think we really should have. I will save that project for next semester.

Looking through Jasper’s sketchbooks is certainly inspiring. I truly love everything about them. The color, line, texture, and attention to detail.

What I love most about looking through Jasper’s sketchbooks in the boldness of just diving into a drawing. I hope you take some inspiration from his sketchbooks today.

Kate’s Sketchbook

Kate is a student currently enrolled in my foundation drawing at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan New York. Kate was nice enough to share two of her Moleskin sketchbooks. If you stick with her sketchbook video you can really see her progression from start to finish.

What I like about Kate’s sketchbooks is that she is not afraid to experiment. Kate is a first-year student so experimentation is the name of the game. I also like how she has jumped around drawing many different subjects.

Kate is really into big simple shapes. However, she also likes to draw with detailed line work. That really showed through in her dinosaur drawings.

The semester is just about over and I’m going to miss having Kate in class. She really held nothing back always jumping into each assignment given with a great attitude.

Delaney’s Sketchbook – Every Square Inch

Wow, how time flies by. I remember back in September when Delaney’s class just started. I also remember seeing Delaney’s first sketchbook. I never saw anything like it. It was one big hot mess, it looked like it was dragged to school behind the School of Visual Arts bus.

Delaney is definitely different and she plays by her own rules. I love that about her. I love having students like Delaney in class who’s work is so dramatically different. It makes the classroom such an interesting place to learn and grow.

What I also like about Delaney is that she puts her heart and soul into each assignment in class. She tried every single traditional technique taught in class. She approached each traditional technique in her own style.

Even if you mainly love traditional realistic type drawings you have got to love Delaney’s passion. Every single square inch of her sketchbook is filled to the brim.

Dennis’s Sketchbook – Quiet & Cool

Dennis is a student currently enrolled in my foundation drawing class at the School of Visual Arts. Dennis is certainly a quiet student who goes about his learning in a methodical way.

You can really see the progress Dennis makes in his sketchbook. Towards the end his drawings just take on a whole different feel. They becomes much more relaxed. Dennis’s drawings look much more refined.

It really is amazing what can happen when you push yourself to finish two sketchbooks in fifteen weeks. If you want to improve your artwork you just have to draw more. It’s really that simple. I’d like to say it’s about quality and not quantity, but it’s really about more versus less.

Specifically when learning how to draw. When it comes to creating pieces for a portfolio, then it’s quality over quantity, less is best.
