I as gear up for a new semester of teaching at the School of Visual Arts my mind brings me back to Jack. Every new semester brings the uncertainty of new students. Last year I was blessed with an amazing class of twenty-one incredible students. Jack was the different student. At first glance I wasn’t sure what he was all about. But as the weeks progressed I became to realize he was in a class all his own.
The energy Jack brings to the table is truly incredible. Jack definitely got the most feedback on YouTube when I posted his first sketchbook. People loved him or really hated him. The comments were out of control.
He handled the negative comments like a trooper. I told him to screw the negative comments and stick to what he loves. That is the only way to succeed and have fun as an artist.
As you know I’m as traditional as they come with my style. I love realistic figurative art. However, I also love different. Jack’s work is certainly different. As you glance through his sketchbook what is the one thing that inspires you?
Is it the way he uses color? Is it the way he fills every page? Or is it Jack’s crazy 1970’s hair style?
Either way I’m so grateful to have students like Jack in my class. I wonder what the new class vibe will be like this September? Who will be the new Jack?
Leave a comment below letting us know what you think about his work.
Oh, and do what you love and screw the haters.
Check out Jack’s tumblr.
Jack’s first sketchbook video.
My favorite of all three videsz was the last one “The boy is nuts”. Jack did some wonderful work on the nudes. I can see a huge improvement from the first two videos. I like the last two drawings he showed. We might have our 21st century Picasso or a revolutionnary animation artist. Does Jack use color pencils? His colors are so vibrant !
Hi Diane, Thanks so much for commenting on Jack’s sketchbook. He uses a mish mosh of everything. Watercolor, ink, pencil and markers. You have to see his work space;) Love your pic, I’ve got to get me one of those.
One has promise when they can master the creative sketchbook in all mediums.
Very gutsy entertaining work..inspires traditionalists! Thanks..
Loving it!
I love the energy of Jack’s work. His body can’t seem to contain it either and is constantly moving too. He is so creative and game in the way he varies his technique. What an imagination. Have you ever tried Intense sticks as a different medium? Jack might enjoy these. They come in watercolour pencils and sticks like conte crayon. I’ve always disliked watercolour pencils because they were a bit insipid but these are really vibrant and are really intense. They are made by Derwent. Cheers to you and Jack.
Beautiful work. So full of movement and life! What a breath of fresh air.
Jack you are amazing! For some one who just painted their first purple apple (yikes! Apples are red!) you are very inspiring. Keep it up. I love it!
Jack’s work is absolutely amazing!!! It has so much energy and chaos combined. He is using so many different elements. Lines, texture, color, shapes. He is on his way to a wonderful career.
This is so beautiful!Very unique!
Honestly it’s so fantastic to see an artist who’s not afraid to do, well, what they love to do! Despite criticism from other people, Jack is surely going to go far as an artist. His work is so filled with energy and passion!
I am a realistic art more person and looking at Jacks work though I feel the energy the excitement coming out of his work, the flow is free, if that is understandable?
Great work Jack!!
